The Self-Portraits of Animation Authors
![]() Our special guest - Barry Purves Barry Purves is not only a puppet animation artist, but also an outstanding educator, awarded with Special Golden Dinosaur on this year’s festival. During the Thursday’s “Self-Portraits of Animation Artists” he will show how to create animation and present his own works. Earlier on Wednesday we will have an opportunity to see films created by his students. Barry Purves is a British puppet animation artist. In his works he exceeds the frames of 3D animation, fusing it with theatre, ballet or opera. He also points out that a story is what counts in his works, not means of presenting it. He never follows technological news, rather staying faithful to classic animation methods. He takes his inspirations from history and culture. Purves also engages himself in acting, screenwriting, and play writing. He cooperated with Tim Burton on “Marts Attacks!” (1996) and with Peter Jackson on “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003). He also participated in creating “The Wind in the Willows”, which is very popular in Poland, and two animation series: “Postman Pat” and “Rupert Bear”. Educational effects of Barry Purves’s work can be valued on Wednesday in Rotunda Cinema. During a special overview the most interesting film studies created during the last three years by his British students will be shown, e.g. “Tomorrow” (directed by Bob Lee), “Little Red Plane” (directed by Charlotte Blacker) and “Playing Ghost” (directed by Bianca Ansem). One of the most eminent puppet animation artists - Barry Purves, welcomes all interested viewers on the live animation show during the cycle: “Self-portraits of Animation Artists”: “Join Barry for an afternoon full of animation insights, and tips, as he reveals the secrets behind his last two films, “Plume” and “Tchaikovsky”. Barry will show behind the scenes footage, much of the research into the puppet and set design, the animatics, and will go through the whole process of making an animated film frame by frame, concentrating particular on the animation techniques”. We remind about the change of screening hours: Meeting with Barry Purves during the “Self-portraits of Animation Artists” cycle will be moved to a new date: 24th of November (previously: 23rd of November, 7:30 P.M.)
