Tomasz Kozak, animation vs found footage
„From animation to found footage and back” is a show during which Tomasz Kozak will describe his past works and future projects. Film screenings will also take place – both animations and found footages. Found footage is a movement in present cinematography based on using film material to create a new work. A film serves only as a raw material to create something new and unique, and the artist completely changes the meaning of cited work. In Poland one of the best known found footage artists is Tomasz Kozak, who will present and describe his works during the Wednesday meeting in National Museum. Found footage gives Kozak a field of artistic discussion with the conventions of reception. Inter-textual works present a fresh and novel view on Polish and European culture and history. Tomasz Kozak became known mostly as a found footage films creator, but there are other fields of his artistic evolution. As a graduate from Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, he also paints and carves, creates installations and wall-paintings, and works as an essayist and artistic editor in “Kronos” quarterly. His adventure with film he began with animation, thus it will open his works overview. Tomasz Kozak – from animation to found footage and back, National Museum - Samurai Room, 23th October, 2011 (Wednesday), 6.00 P.M. |

LE VOYAGE DANS LA LUNE/A TRIP TO THE MOON, reż./dir.: Georges Méliès, muz./music: AIR, oryginał 1902 ręcznie malowany/original 1902 hand painted, odrestaurowany 2011/restoration 2011, Francja/France, 16’
Six scientists, members of the Astronomers’ Club, set out on an expedition to the moon. The original Georges Méliès’ film had two versions: a black-and-white and hand-painted one. A Trip to the Moon, a 14-minute film, considered a feature film at the beginning of 20th century, turned out to be a world success and the first bestseller. For many years the color version of the film was considered lost. Today, for the first time in Poland, we present the unearthed, restored color version of the film.
THE FIRST INTERVIEW, reż./dir.: Dennis Tupicoff, narrator: Agnès Varda, dok./doc., Australia, 2011, 15’
The desire to faithfully recreate, in the form of a film, the world’s first media interview recorded in Paris in 1886 became a sort of his idée fixe as all his animated works were inspired by various types of documentary recordings. The film is narrated by a famous French photographer and director Agnès Varda.

Tomasz Kozak – from animation to found footage and back
Tomasz Kozak is an unusual and versatile artist, whose works cannot be pigeonholed. Having graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw, the Department of Painting and Animation, Kozak started with animation, next focused on found footage, and today is planning an animated adaptation of “Transatlantic” by Witold Gombrowicz. His works combine two elements, the sensual and intellectual one, and can be described as truly engagé: critical of myths and images that determine the thinking of the contemporary Pole and European.
