ANIMATION WORKSHOPS

The animation workshops at the festival has become an enormously popular event attracting crowds of animation enthusiasts. That is why we have decided that this year’s workshops would be dedicated to that genre only. We have prepared a remarkably wide offer of workshops hosted by exceptional guests and we are convinced that every animation enthusiast will find something of great interest!

19th - 20th November

Host: Suzan Pitt – Suzan Pitt is an American film animator and painter, whose surreal, psychological animated films and paintings have been exhibited worldwide. Her film Asparagus (1979) has been awarded on numerous occasions, for instance it was included in the list ‘ASIFA 50 on 50’ prepared together with ASIFA (International Animated Film Association) as one of 50 best animated shorts created in the last half century. The artist is also a keen teacher, she currently teaches experimental animation at California Institute of the Arts.

Workshop description:
The workshops are addressed to people who would like to make an animated film. Every participant should come to the workshop with an idea for a film in the form of drawings, shooting scripts, concise sketches, idea guidelines and all that would be helpful to present the main ideas of the animation.
At the workshops the project of every participant will be discussed and analyzed. The group will be working on improving the ideas while discussing various possibilities of the ideas’ implementations. In each case, however, the emphasis will be put on the author’s individualism and original idea. The aim of the workshops is to provide both the animators-to-be and experienced artists with an opportunity to reconsider and improve their ideas for films. Every day of the workshops, the participants will be asked to bring their presentation materials as well as drawing and writing materials so as to be able to make notes and change the content of the planned stories. Presentation materials should be large and legible enough to allow the group to read them pinned to the board on the wall.

The workshop will be conducted in English!

The interpreter will be present.

alt21st - 23rd November

Host: Ron Diamond – Ron Diamond is the Acme’s founder and executive producer (Acme Filmworks is a well-known American commercial animation studio specializing in commercials, short films, TV series, feature films and distribution) as well as the Animation World Network’s co-founder and president. He produced a short film Nibbles (2003), which was nominated for the Academy Awards, and a full-length animated feature film Drawn From Memory (1995).

Workshop description:
Workshop participants will have an opportunity to look closely at the creative process related to TV commercials production. The participants will be commissioned to work using their creativity and they will be asked to prepare and realize their original ideas in the same way, in which the main directors’ works in the Acme Filmworks are created. The comparison between creative works prepared by the participants and those made by professionals as well as the discussion on the realized productions will enable the participants to better understand how various possibilities can be used in the future.

The workshops provide the participants with the opportunity to watch the animated films program – films were selected by Ron Diamond – prepared for the 13th Annual Animation Shows of Shows.

The interpreter will be present.
